Portuguese cistern : El jadida city

This vast underground and vaulted room was part of the castle built in 1514 by the Portuguese. It was probably used as a weapons room before being used as a water reserve. On a square plan of 34 m side, it has six naves whose vaults of ridges rest on 25 columns and pillars.

The central bay is pierced by a wide oculus through which the daylight flows, which produces by reflection on the water of the cistern, a surprising effect of mirror impregnating the place of a strange atmosphere.

The Portuguese cistern of El Jadida seduced Orson Welles to the point where he shot some scenes of his film Othello. Some scenes from the films The Return of the Black Stallion, produced by Francis Ford Coppola and Harem, by Arthur Joffe, were also shot in it.
